The Department of Cardiology at PGI, Chandigarh, continues to push the boundaries of modern medical science and technology with its latest achievement in cardiac care. Recently, an elderly male patient underwent a groundbreaking “MitraClip” intervention for a leaking mitral heart valve, marking a significant milestone in northern India.
Performing a “MitraClip” intervention is a complex procedure that demands exceptional precision and expertise. Dr Rajesh Vijayvergiya and his team successfully implanted a percutaneous “MitraClip” device into the mitral valve position in the patient’s heart, through the groin. This minimally invasive procedure aims to prevent the backflow of blood by placing a clip across the leaking mitral valve.
Advancements in Heart Valve Treatments
PGI’s Department of Cardiology has been at the forefront of innovative heart valve treatments. While percutaneous valve replacement therapy for narrowed heart valves has been performed routinely for the past few years, the addition of the “MitraClip” therapy enhances the department’s armamentarium for treating diseased heart valves. These advanced and high-quality therapies are accessible and available at an affordable price at PGI.
PGI’s Department of Cardiology recently showcased its academic excellence and interventional skills at a national cardiology conference. Led by Prof. Rajesh Vijayvergiya, the department performed a live case of a complex coronary angioplasty, which was broadcasted to the Cardiology Society of India (CSI) – National Interventional Cardiology (NIC) conference. This collaborative exchange of knowledge and skills benefits patient care globally and highlights PGI’s commitment to advancing medical science.
